How to Properly Care for Your CEREC® Restorations

If you’re thinking about porcelain inlays and onlays in Midtown Manhattan to restore a weakened or damaged tooth to its original strength, then you may already be considering CEREC® restoration. After all, these porcelain crowns are the new gold standard for dental repair and offer a host of benefits when compared to other alternatives. More importantly for many patients, the time involved in getting this type of crown is dramatically less than that required for traditional crowns. Of course, regardless of whether you’re considering CEREC® or have already received your new crown, there are some important things you need to know to ensure that you properly care for your restoration.

  1. Recognize that your restoration does not make the rest of your natural tooth immune to cavities. You must still use common sense dental hygiene techniques to ensure that you clean your restored tooth daily. That requires brushing at least twice each day, and flossing as well.
  2. Flossing can sometimes be difficult in the area surrounding your crown. In most instances, any difficulty you experience as you try to get the floss between your teeth should subside within a short time. If it doesn’t contact your dentist for further instructions.
  3. Be alert to sensitivities that linger for more than a short time after the procedure is performed. Many people experience sensitivity to extreme cold in the immediate aftermath of a CEREC® restoration, but that should pass within a day or two. If it persists, consult your dentist to see if any sort of adjustment needs to be made.
  4. Your restored tooth will be perfectly capable of handling almost all chewing needs. However, it is wise to avoid chewing with that tooth for at least 24 hours so that the material can complete its strengthening process. In addition, do not chew ice, other hard objects, or sticky candy and similar foods. These can crack or remove the restorations.
  5. There may be discomfort after your restoration, and minor inflammation in some instances. Over the counter medicine can help, so have some sort of anti-inflammatory on hand to help you through the process.
  6. Follow your regular dental schedule with respect to checkups and cleanings. Despite the strength your new crown provides to the repaired tooth, checkups remain the best way to identify potential decay and ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy. Those examinations and cleanings are also your best option for protecting your crown and providing it with the longevity you deserve.

When you follow these simple tips, you’ll help to maximize the benefits that your restoration provides while protecting your teeth from future damage and decay.
